In the early years of the Industrial Revolution, public and private interest in science and exploration of the natural world exploded in Victorian society. Private collections of botanical, geological, and zoological specimens became a popular pastime of the "educated classes" who had the resources and time to gather samples from across the globe. This gallery tour, delivered by Curator of British Art, Melissa Gustin, explores the ways in which Victorian artists peppered topics of natural philosophy throughout their work, fuelling and engaging with the culture of the time. Walking tour around the gallery. Please meet in the Walker Art Gallery entrance at 1.45pm for a 2pm start Please note, tickets will be released 60 days in advance of the session date.
